Abstract
The Columbina talpacoti species, a common type of bird in Brazil, is often the target of illegal trade or used as pets, which can lead to the threat of extinction as the number of individuals of the species decreases. As this is a rare species with unknown hematological parameters, this study aimed to describe the species’ leukocyte values and biometrics (weight). Twenty-five birds were captured at a private farm located in Guarapari, Espirito Santo, in southeastern Brazil. The capture and sampling were conducted in October 2014. The birds’ body mass was measured, and their blood was collected. A blood smear was made, and a differential leukocyte count was performed. The average body mass found for the species was 46.7 ± 4.7 g. For hematologic reference, we used a value of 43.3 ± 14.6 for lymphocytes, and 55.8 ± 14.5 and 0.56 ± 0.76 for heterophils and monocytes, respectively. Using the data collected in this study, the reference values were calculated.
