Abstract
An effective technique to reduce the free-edge interlaminar stresses in a symmetric laminate under uniform axial extension is presented. A pseudo three-dimensional finite element method is employed to calculate the interlaminar stresses. The reduction of the interlaminar stresses is achieved by varying the fiber volume fraction near the free edge. Numerical results show that the interlaminar normal and shear stresses near the free edges can be significantly reduced or even totally eliminated by the proposed technique.
