Abstract
Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) movement has brought an alternative for software solutions in cheapest form. FOSS Movement is very popular in libraries around the world. The main objective of this study is to explore the current status of FOSS Movement in Nepal and the efforts made by the individuals and LIS organizations to promote Free and Open Source Software in Nepal. The methodology of this study is based upon the literature review and interviews of some key persons involved in Free and Open Source Software in LIS in Nepal. Archives of official websites of library science professional bodies and the information have been recorded from different websites of the major libraries and FOSS related agencies. It is found that FOSS Movement in LIS Profession of Nepal is not very old and there exist a number of challenges for the implementation of FOSS. This paper has also suggested measures to be taken to promote FOSS movement.
