Abstract

Fram I, a multinational scientific ice floe station, was established March 11, 1979, 330 miles f r om the North Pole at 84°24.6′N, 06°30.9′W. It is expected the station will be occupied by approximately 16 scientists for about 2 months.Fram I is a U.S. station with participation by Danish scientists through the Commission for Scientific Research in Greenland, Norwegian scientists through the Norwegian Polar Institute, and U. S. scientists through Lamont‐Doherty Geological Observatory under contract to the Office of Naval Research. The Bedford Institute of Oceanography serves as the Canadian focal point. In the U.S., logistic arrangements are being coordinated by the Polar Research Center, University of Washington, under contract to the Office of Naval Research.
