Abstract

In the spring of 1980, the Office of Naval Research will sponsor a multifaceted experiment, Fram 2, emphasizing marine geophysics, long‐range, low‐frequency acoustics, and physical oceanography in the Pole Abyssal Plain of the eastern Arctic Ocean. Personnel from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Lamont‐Doherty Geological Observatory, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, University of Washington, Naval Underwater Systems Center, Naval Research Laboratory, Naval Oceanographic Research and Development Agency, and the Polar Research Laboratory will participate in the program. The experiment will involve three ice camps—a main camp, referred to as Fram 2, and two remote camps. Camp 1 will be located within the Pole Abyssal Plain, 300 km away from Fram 2 camp, and camp 2 will be north of Ellesmere Island, 750 km away from Fram 2.
