Abstract
The metropolitan region of Buenos Aires was the object of significant transformations during the last decade of the 20th century, as were many other Latin American metropolitan areas. In fact, there is a change of pattern in the urbanization process from the European radial-concentric city to the North American dispersed urbanization. The difference between these processes is based first, in the different socio-economic composition of the actors; and secondly, in the fragmentation of the urban fabric. New private housing projects play a very important role in the restructuring of the urban land in the form of urban archipelagos with concomitant legal issues and the problematic of increased spatial and social segregation.
