Abstract

A diametral‐compression test that features disk specimens with chevron notches was developed and applied to measure fracture toughness (Klc) of three ceramics. Fracture–toughness values calculated from the fracture loads and a compliance analysis were in good agreement with values measured by other fracture–mechanics techniques. Advantages of the proposed test include simple specimen geometry, minimal requirements for fixtures, and consequent potential for application at elevated temperatures.
