Abstract

The Geological Society of America will sponsor a Penrose Conference on Fracture Mechanics and Earthquake Source Mechanisms on September 27 through 30, 1971, at the Snowmass Mountain Chalet, Snowmass‐at‐Aspen, Colorado. The purpose of the conference is to bring together experts in the fields of rock mechanics and earthquake source mechanisms in order to develop a better understanding of the causes of earthquakes, and to focus attention on current research needs.Seven informal three‐hour sessions will review and discuss current research in friction, pore pressure, microearthquakes, seismic source mechanisms, and crustal deformation relevant to the source problem. Three informal geological field trips will be offered.
