Abstract

The concept of fractal dimension has been applied to analysis of surface roughness. The method is described and practical examples are given for surface profiles of stainless steel with various surface finishes. These examples illustrate how this technique describes surface texture in more detail than conventional roughness parameters and reveals systematic differences in texture depending on the surface treatment.
