Abstract
This letter discusses the concept of utilizing field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology to manage long-term (20-year-plus) lifecycle costs associated with central office (CO) switches. The tremendous advances in the underlying technology make a cost-effective transition possible in both a software-transparent and customer-impact-transparent manner.
