Abstract
The degree to which new librarians are assimilated into the professional culture is critical to successfully dealing with the challenges facing academic libraries today. Clear understanding of the values of the institution and the support processes in place for professional contribution and growth enhance personal effectiveness and organizational relevance. This article reports the results of a survey of ARL directors and entry-level librarians on programs in place and methods used for integrating new librarians into the institutional and professional culture. Survey questions included a special focus on minority recruitment and retention. Responses provide a framework for current practices and expectations among ARL libraries. Comparisons are made to previous research and suggestions are provided for new directions.
