Abstract

In an attempt to expose students to a variety of sources of information and increase their inter est and involvement with social studies issues, many middle school teachers are deliberately incorporating a variety of types of texts into their social studies curricula. A text one seventh grade teacher, whom we will call Linda, found particularly intriguing was David Macaulay's Castle (1977). This book presents an in-depth study of 13th century English castles through both text and illustrations, and Linda saw it as a very informative sidebar highlighting one facet of the medieval period her class was studying. Macaulay's text and award-winning illustrations have the potential to enhance students' understandings of the structure and purposes of medieval castles, emphasizing medieval peo ples' need for security. It presents an abundance of opportunities for students to investigate the physical, social, geographic, and political factors influencing the construction of castles.
