Abstract

Transdermal drug delivery has gained significant attention due to its non-invasive nature and potential for controlled release of medications. Transdermal patches, in particular, have emerged as a promising dosage form for delivering drugs across the skin barrier. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the formulation and characterization techniques employed in the development of transdermal patches. It covers various aspects including formulation strategies, selection of polymers and permeation enhancers, methods of preparation, and characterization techniques such as physicochemical, mechanical, and in vitro/in vivo evaluation. Additionally, the advantages, challenges, and future perspectives of transdermal patches are discussed, highlighting their potential in improving patient compliance and therapeutic outcomes.
