Abstract

The analysis and design of reflector systems involve calculations of illumination intensities on output apertures that may have complicated shapes. The reflectors themselves may be aspherical or even nonrotationally symmetric. Here systems with a single reflector and a point source of energy are considered, and an analytic formula for computing illumination intensity on an output aperture with an arbitrary shape is presented. A numerical algorithm for calculating the intensity by this formula is also provided. The intensity formula is derived here for systems in which the point source may be nonisotropic and the reflector may not be rotationally symmetric. The formula expresses the illumination intensity in terms of the polar radius defining the reflector, its derivatives up to second order, and the optical path length. The formula is suitable for analytic and numerical calculations of the illumination intensities.
