Abstract

Metallurgical transformation of a W filament into W2B5 or WB4 was found in our field ion microscope observations of boron fibers. The W–boride formation at the B/W interface is of technological and industrial importance. Processes of the W–boride formation have been studied using field ion microscopy by sputter-depositing B films onto a W tip and by heating the tip at varied temperatures. Stable W2B5 was formed at heating temperatures higher than 1200 K. The formation of W2B5 {0001} was found frequently on the W{011}. This may be caused by the small misfit between the locations of W atoms in bulk W and of those in borides. Characteristics in the He-ion image of W2B5 obtained in this study showed a resemblance to that previously observed at the core of boron fibers.
