Abstract
A new approach to estimating the initial residual stresses during cutting is considered, which involves determining the stress-strain state of the surface layer by numerically searching for the equilibrium of shells surrounding a certain spherical core with a volume equal to the volume of the metal pressed into each point of the machined surface.
