Abstract

A highly stereoselective and reversible enzyme system, using NADPH and protoberberine alkaloids, was discovered in Corydalis cava bulbs catalyzing the formation of (R)-configured tetrahydroprotoberberine alkaloids; the hitherto assumed precursor role of (R)-reticuline for these alkaloids is incorrect.
