Abstract

IN the preceding letter, Katzin and Gebert are criticizing the conclusions drawn by us on the formation of aquo ions1,2. The transition group elements were originally studied as nitrates in alcoholic solution, since the nearly anhydrous alcoholic solutions of perchlorates are liable to explode violently. After the publication of the second paper2, we have used perchlorates and other non-complexing salts and found qualitative agreement with the new results of Katzin and Gebert. We do not agree, however, with all the conclusions drawn from these observations.
