Abstract
Summaryo1.A pyrolysis pitch was separated into narrower fractions, these were examined by IR and PMR spectroscopy and their average structural formulae were calculated using the data obtained.2.The ability of fractions and some of their mixtures to form a meso-phase during heat-treatment was examined. Soluble, fusible high molar mass fractions were found to be most prone to meso-phase formation; these fractions have a well-developed condensed aromatic structure, while light fractions function as a medium during heat-treatment.
