Abstract

Complex formation between picolinate (HL= picolinic acid) and aluminium(III) or zinc(II) in 0.15 M KNO 3 was investigated in the pH range 3 to 7. The experiments were carried out as potentiometric titrations using glass electrodes. The experimental data can be explained by formation of the complexes ZnL +, ZnL 2 and ZnL 3 - for the zinc-picolinate system and AlL 2+, AlL 2 + and Al(OH)L 2 for the aluminium -picolinate system. The equilibrium constants were refined by the least squares computer program TITRER. A plotter program, DISTPLOT, displayed the distribution of aluminium(III) and zinc(II) picolinate species and illustrated the possible biological competition between the two metal ions for the ligand.
