Abstract

The formation energies of cation and anion vacancies at 0°K at a (100) surface plane of sodium chloride have been calculated using the method of Mort and Littleton. The value for a cation, anion vacancy pair is found to be 2.12 eV, slightly greater than the corresponding bulk value of 1.90 eV. The calculated value for the surface vacancy pair energy represents a first order approximation. The assumptions involved are discussed in some detail.
