Abstract

INTRODUCTION . This paper presents the research on gender training in Spanish universities that is taught in the Degree in Social Education. It was conducted in 36 universities (27 public and 7 private). We consider relevant to know the compliance of the The Organic Law 1/2004 on Protection against Gender Violence, that in its article number 7 establishes that “Universities will include and promote the knowledge, teaching and research of gender equality and no-discrimination in all academic aspects...”. METHOD. We used a multi-method perspective. In order to identify the presence of the subjects under study, we obtained the data by means of a content analysis of the teaching guides through the different programs. We have also set up an on-line questionnaire for 4th year students, in order to gather their opinion on the gender training that they had received. The Cronbach alpha coefficient has been calculated for the 45 ordinal variables with a value of 0.85; the qualitative validation has been carried out with the evaluation of 18 experts in gender. RESULTS. We detected the weak presence in the program of specific subjects related to these topics. Students claim that they know how to identify a situation of gender violence. Only 15,49% say that they have reported a situation of violence, although 65,73% of the students have known about or have been witnesses of these types of situation in their environment. DISCUSSION. According to previous investigation (cf. Titus 2000; Rebollo et al., 2009; Garcia-Perez et al., 2011; Cassabona y Tellado, 2012; Donoso-Vazquez et al., 2013), we consider it is necessary to include the training on gender violence in university curricula and to promote compliance with the current legislation on this issue.
