Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the instrumental rationale underlying projects of citizenship construction that are taught to children in Colombia. By in-field experience and law analysis we present how political education as well as democratic principles have been subsumed under an instrumental logic which only reproduces a ruling hegemonic system with its hierarchical and exclusive mechanisms of social organisation. From this perspective, we propose an alternative to citizenship construction based on critical theory and the collective creation of Experimental Theatre in Colombia. To this end, we introduce the problems that normally face institutions with political education, thence we further discuss the influence of school government over processes of citizenship education. Finally, we present our proposal based on arts, from which the current educational logic might be deconstructed in order to generate alternatives for the consolidation of citizenship.
