Abstract
Since its introduction in the United States in 1960, the oral contraceptive (OC) pill has empowered women to make individual choices about when or whether to have children and pursue marriage/relationships, education, careers, and professional development. By providing safe, effective fertility control, OC have decreased the rate of unintended pregnancies. Moreover, a large amount of data indicates that OC use is associated with many short- and long-term noncontraceptive health benefits that increase in magnitude with long-term use. Nevertheless, many women remain anxious and ambivalent about OC use, and some healthcare providers may perpetuate unfounded misperceptions regarding the pill. Healthcare providers need to be well informed about all the effects produced by OC so they can better educate their patients about these agents.
