Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the Portuguese Forensic Medicine system. It includes the previous and current organization of forensic services of a medical nature (including forensic pathology and clinical forensic medicine) at the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, I.P. (technical services, human resources, forensic medical activity, and forensic medical expertise request). It also refers to private forensic medicine services, which have grown in recent years. An overview is presented regarding the forensic medicine proof and the status of the medical expert, according to Portuguese law. The close connection between forensic medicine services and schools of medicine is highlighted.
