Abstract
Forced marriage deprives men and women of their fundamental rights. It is a form of marriage that is not based on freedom and full consent of one or both parties concerned but on physical or emotional pressure. It can bring about devastating consequences for both partners and therefore has been proscribed by international instruments as well as domestic legislations in most countries including Islamic ones. Physical forms of violent victimization such as assault, burning, or in extreme cases, murder, and emotional forms like insult and verbal abuse are among the harmful consequences of forced marriage. Improper social norms, distorted religious beliefs, and social and cultural problems have fuelled the expansion of forced marriage in Islamic countries. Unfortunately, the phenomenon continues despite the recent efforts made by governments and human rights supporters within these countries. To eradicate forced marriage, Islamic countries must follow the Islamic religious ordinances prohibiting this kind of marriage, fulfill their international obligations in terms of proper legislations for proscribing forced marriage, (consult professionals and experts of Islamic jurisprudence), and use the mass media and all public and private resources to raise public awareness about its harmful effects.
