Abstract
Foraminifera were studied in 109 samples from four drillholes (2TG-77, 2TG-97, 2TG-120 and 2TG-129) located near the coastline of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Fifty six benthic and twenty nine planktonic foraminiferal taxa were identified. The drilled sections are believed to be early Miocene and Quaternary in age. The probable presence of the Pliocene deposits in drillholes 2TG-97 and 2TG-120 is not excluded. The composition of the Quaternary fauna indicates deposition at the approximately similar water temperatures as the actual ones. In the early Miocene, however, water temperatures were somewhat higher.
