Abstract

Smart and sustainable cities are the two terms being used increasingly in the past two decades as far as the new era is concerned. ‘The cities of the future’ is the term used to refer to such developments. These are technologically enhanced and sustainable planned utopias springing up over all parts of the world. Unlike traditional cities, these incorporate advanced and latest technologies, for example, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques such as machine learning, deep learning, pattern recognition, and Internet of Things (IoT) techniques. All of these techniques are being smartly implemented to ease and minimize the daily problems of traditional cities such as traffic congestion, air quality monitoring, public transport availability, and providing last-mile connectivity. The initial cost of such green smart cities is higher, but in the long term, it will be paid back in the tangible form of savings and non-tangible forms like the peace of mind and well-being of its residents. This chapter explores the use of AI and IoT technologies in the field of green smart cities. Beginning with the general introduction and need for green, smart, and sustainable cities and brief details of advanced and smart technologies, the chapter ends up discussing various domains of green and smart cities in which such technologies can be incorporated to achieve the desired sustainable cities that will boost the strategy to conserve energy and natural resources.
