Abstract
The suburban village of Garden City, New York, is overrun with gray squirrels, Sciurus carolinensis. Their numbers and their boldness, contrasted with respectful behavior at our summer place in the country further east on Long Island, where they are hunted to some extent, are a nuisance and seriously interfere with my bird-banding operations. Broken bread or crackers attract them particularly. They will often steal bread from my bird trap instead of picking up pieces lying nearby. If the door of the trap drops on them, they do not mind, and usually back out without difficulty. They have also acquired great skill in taking food from the trap without tripping it, thereby not being temporarily barred from taking more.
