Abstract

In Scottish waters, saithe ( Pollachius virens L.) feed on crustaceans and fish. Crustaceans are most abundant in their diet in the North Sea (30–40% of the total weight of food) and most varied in the western area where several bathypelagic species provide the main prey, particularly Meganyctiphanes norvegica Sars (8%). The two main fish in the stomachs are Norway pout ( Trisopterus esmarki (Nilsson, 1855)) which is predominant in the diet in the North Sea and blue whiting ( Micromesistius poutassou (Risso, 1826)) which is most abundant in the Hebrides area. Consumption was evaluated using a method based on the kinetics of digestion and on the amount of food observed in the stomachs. Average estimates for saithe consumption reach 2.7 million metric tons in the North Sea and 0.5 million metric tons in the Hebrides area.
