Abstract
Abstract The folk remedies that have been passed down to the present day through the medium of the Welsh language derive from both written and oral sources. The earliest extant Welsh medicinaJ manuscripts date from the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, and most of these were partly based on the works of the Physicians of Myddfai, near Llandovery, and were actually used as manuals. In the main, they consist of various treatises on the nature of the seven planets, the four elements, and the four humours, based on the works of Galen and Hippocrates. The main proposal of Galen's works was, firstly, the concept that the cause of disease was a deficiency in one of the four humours, and that treatment involved re-establishing their balance, and secondly, an acceptance of the ‘doctrine of contraries’ or treatment by opposites.
