Abstract

The art of sword swallowing has very long historical roots and was known to the ancient Greeks; in later times, this art form, especially from the 16th and 18th centuries, developed in Japan, being brought there by the Chinese neighbors. The sword swallowers were the first accomplices in the development of esophagoscopy, as they prompted doctors to think about the possibility of inserting metal tubes into the esophagus for diagnosis and therapy.
