Abstract
Just before November's Supercomputing '98 in Orlando, Florida, both Silicon Graphics and IBM claimed to have produced the world's fastest supercomputers. At the same time, Compaq announced a world record for sorting one terabyte of data on its latest supercomputer. And just four months earlier, Japan's NEC announced it had the world's fastest supercomputer.
