Abstract

Fluoride emission from tunnel kilns has been assessed based on data obtained at several tile works in the Iwami District, western Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The results showed an average emission of 24 mgF/m 3 N in the flue gas. Following an alkali cleaning process the concentration decreased to 1 mgF/m 3 N. The bulk of the fluoride in the flue gas was in gaseous form, and most of the fluoride emitted may have originated from material clay. Fluoride release rate in the firing process was 40-60% in general. The quantity of fluoride emitted from a tunnel kiln was approximately in proportion to the weight of the product. The weight of the product can be estimated from the number of products or from the quantities of material used. Based on these data, the total fluoride emission from tunnel kilns throughout the Prefecture was estimated. The fluoride emission factor for tunnel kilns was 120 gF/ton of material used.
