Abstract

ABSTRACTAlthough many flower-specific genes from various higher plants have been isolated in recent years, it is worth pointing out that none of the clones presented here have been described by other groups. We have no precise idea concerning the physiological function of the proteins encoded by these genes, but some structural features (proline-rich domains, presence or absence of signal peptides, internal hydrophobic domains, zinc fingers, high content of basic amino acids, heme binding domain) may he extremely useful pieces of information for designing an experimental strategy in order to elucidate the real function of these proteins, Genomic clones corresponding to some of the above described cDNAs (SF2, SF18, SF3) have been isolated and completely sequenced. Their promoter regions are presently being investigated in transient expression and stable transformation. This opens the way to their possible use in plant breeding.
