Abstract

Finishing is a tertiary operation performed in any production process which is uneconomical and uncontrollable. Conventional finishing operations include grinding, lapping and honing. These methods are limited to external surfaces and accessible areas. To overcome this limitation extrusion honing process has been developed which offers the characteristic feature of finishing and deburring simultaneously. This process involves pressurized flow of semi viscous medium across the surface to be finished. This deburring technology traces a wide span of applications in biomedical, automotive, aerospace sectors etc. Among the several process factors studied, for instance extrusion pressure, velocity, grain size and concentration of abrasive the significant influencing factor is the abrasive concentration. The existing work focuses in studying the influence of volume fraction of abrasive concentration from 5 to 25% in the carrier media on the resulting parameters such as dynamic pressure, strain rate and magnitude of velocity to compute Ra. One-way extrusion honing process is experimented on Inconel-625 alloy and simulation in the flow analysis software. Finally the simulated results are compared with the experimental results and validated.
