Abstract

Reducing emission and energy consumption are of great concern to sustainable development of industry in modern society. Ventilation system is the key factor to maintain industrial production, its efficiency is related to the pollutant emissions and energy consumption. In this study, we propose a novel ventilation system denoted multi-vortex ventilation (MVV), which is composed of several subsystems for industrial plant with large aspect ratio. This work aims to deal with the flow characteristics and ventilation effectiveness of MVV. The results show that MVV works when the distance between adjacent subsystems is long enough or the ventilation flow rate of adjacent subsystem is similar. When exhaust velocity reaches 5 m/s, there will be low pressure of – 30 Pa and vertical velocity of 2 m/s at vortex core, so as to transport the pollutants to the exhaust outlet rapidly. Moreover, the ventilation effectiveness is used to evaluate a room with MVV and to compare it with that of mixing ventilation (MV). Compared with MV, MVV can achieve 91 % ∼ 351 % higher ventilation effectiveness in the same ventilation flow rate. The results will provide a valuable method in the design of ventilation system in the industrial plants with large aspect ratio.
