Abstract
An interesting paper was published in the BJN on 31 July 1909, about the use of special ships as fl oating hospitals. In the summer of 1873, New York suffered a spell of hot weather so severe that the editorial staff of a large daily newspaper decided to take some of their newsboys for a day trip on a barge. The benefi cial results were so obvious that it was decided to continue the trips each year thereafter. While on one of these trips, a paper boy mentioned that although it was great fun, it was a pity his mother and sick baby brother could not also come along. This remark started the practice of taking mothers and babies, and soon the old excursion vessel was swapped for a special ship; fully equipped as a hospital to care for day patients:
