Abstract

The 600-ton, 355-ft-long, manned ocean buoy FLIP has successfully passed its initial trials at Dabob Bay, Washington, in which it has been flipped from the horizontal to the vertical position, in which it has a 300-ft draft, and back again to the horizontal position. Its natural heaving period was 27 sec, as expected. The flipping operation is discussed, and films are shown. Records of the motion during the flipping operation made by the 3D range facility of the Keyport Naval Torpedo Testing Station are shown. In going from the horizontal to the vertical, the time to change from 10° to 80° is about 100 sec. [This presentation represents results of research sponsored by the Office of Naval Research.]
