Abstract
ABSTRACTAircraft carrier flight deck design ia the result of a long iterative process which involves many complex and often subjective decisions. The process is basically a trial and error effort to integrate many diverse functions into an operationally satisfactory flight deck that is compatible with below decks arrangements. This paper attempts to delineate the rationale for these decisions. Those aspects of aircraft carrier design related to the aircraft/ship interface as they apply to the flight deck are described in detail. This paper does not offer pat solutions to problems of flight deck design, but reports the operational experience gained with past Aircraft Carrier designs and discusses problems which must be addressed in the design of new aircraft carrier flight decks.
