Abstract

AbstractHollow composite beams reduce the overall weight and depth of a beam when compared to a solid composite beam. The present paper analyses the behaviour of hollow composite beams under impact loading using the Finite Element Analysis Tool, ANSYS®. A low velocity drop impact test was adopted for the analysis. The effect of length of hollow portion and velocity of impact on moment carrying capacity was further analysed under impact loading conditions. It was observed that the midspan deflection increased with increase in the length of hollow portion and velocity of impact. The deflection at midspan increased by 11.69% when length of hollow portion was increased from 2.8 m to 4.4 m. A comparison was also done between the solid composite, hollow composite, and reinforced concrete beams. Hollow composite beams exhibited more deflection than solid composite beam and lower deflection than the reinforced concrete beam. However, Solid composite beam showed lower mid span deflection when compared to reinforced concrete beam and hollow composite beam.KeywordsCompositeBeamsHollowImpactSteelConcreteFlexure
