Abstract

We propose an efficient numerical algorithm for 2D simulations of flexible filaments. We apply it to calculate the metastable states that arise from the buckling instability of a ferromagnetic filament during magnetic field inversion as well as the eigenfrequencies of the buckling deformations at subcritical values of the magnetoelastic number. To demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm we also analyze the dynamics of a flexible filament with an attached Quincke particle and illustrate its bifurcations between oscillating and rotating states.
