Abstract

We developed a bi-directional brain computer interface enabling both electrical stimulation and recording through the same flexible implantable probe. An electrical stimulation threshold as small as 5 ÎŒA was demonstrated by effectively controlling the turning behavior of mice with the probe implanted in the motor cortex area. More importantly, both the neurons and electrodes remained healthy upon electrical stimulation as the spike waveform recorded from the same neuron remained unchanged by the same electrode before and after stimulation, showing the stability of the proposed system for neural stimulation and recording.
