Abstract
Guidelines for designing a product family for automatic assembly are outlined. A flexible automatic assembly system for the manufacture of a range of automobile headlamps is described. The sequence of assembly operations is given and the major elements of the system including the supervisory controller, are detailed. It is concluded that a product family design theme should be followed where the demand for individual products is low.
