Abstract
Rodent body sizes vary seasonally and, in cyclic regions, multiannually. Large animals have been assumed to be competitively superior and favoured selectively at peak densities. Weights at capture of immature bank voles Clethrionomys glareolus and field voles Microtus agrestis brought into a laboratory in early autumn did not correlate with maximum body weights or life-time litter production gained on good standard food. However, weights converged already in late autumn towards a stable ranking between individuals
