Abstract

X-ray and neutron diffraction diagrams of CrAs have been prepared in the temperature range from 4.2 to 1070°K. CrAs undergoes a crystallographic and magnetic first order phase transition accompanied by a large volume increase for the low temperature phase. The transition takes place in the temperature range from 240 to 190°K and shows hysteresis and supercooling effects. The magnetic spiral structure of CrAs ( l) has been refined at 4.2°K and 198°K. The first order phase transition is interpreted as an electronic transition between localized and collective states.
