Abstract
You may or you may not have had to take the Hippocratic oath as part of your graduation ceremony on the completion of your medical degree. If you did, you may still be scratching your head, as although we commonly attribute the saying ‘first do no harm’ to the Greek physician Hippocrates, it doesn’t in fact appear in the Hippocratic Oath1 but from another of his works ‘Of the Epidemics’. A reflection on this, and what some authors have commented on as being the ‘impossible oath’2 seems like a good place to start for my session in 2022 RCPA Pathology Update Conference, in which I will be exploring why ‘doing harm to ourselves’ even if its unintentional through the demands of our chosen medical careers is such an issue of concern.
