PurposeShows how a family‐friendly policy has a positive effect on recruitment and employee retention at First Direct.Design?methodology/approachDescribes First Direct's flexible working patterns, health schemes, on‐site nursery, perks and employee incentives.FindingsReveals that the package of benefits has not only helped First Direct to attract good employees, but also makes them more productive at work.Practical implicationsUnderlines the benefits that companies can gain by treating their employees well.Originality/valueShows how parents, especially mothers, can make an important contribution to the workforce given the necessary support. Gives ideas for improving employee retention in a call centre.
