Abstract

(−)−2−α-methylbenzylamino-5-nitropyridine (MBANP) forms a monoclinic crystal with symmetry point group 2 [1]. The material is capable of being piezoelectric [2] and has therefore been considered as a material for SAW device fabrication. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first demonstration of SAW propagation in a polar organic crystal, indicating a new class of material for signal processing applications. A SAW velocity of 1416 ms−1 in the [010] direction was measured, which is typically a factor of two lower than for many inorganic substrates.
