Abstract

This paper describes recent fire code developments in New Zealand. A new performance based code has recently been introduced, leading to major changes in the fire safety design of buildings. The code requires specific fire engineering design for certain buildings, and permits it as an option for all buildings. This new regime has created enormous interest in fire safety among designers. A Design Guide is being produced to give guidance to those making and approving designs, and a major educational efforts is underway, including a series of national seminars and a new degree in fire engineering.
